What Parents Can Do to Ease the Pressure of Exams

We all know how crucial and important exams in anyone’s life are. Exam time is both important and stressful for the students and their parents. The exam pressure is directly proportional to the increasing competition. Pressure can be positive and useful to complete deadlines or to avoid problems in a smart way. However, if the pressure is prolonged, it can become negative, depending on how the person reacts to it. A lot of pressure might not help the child to perform well but can lead to depression, inferiority complex and tension which are definitely some things everyone wants to stay away from. As a parent you obviously want good things to happen to your child but you have to keep in mind the consequences of the same.

A lot of parents, unintentionally, pressurise their child to get better grades in order to succeed in life. But they also need to remember that exams are not the only way to a successful future. Exams are an important part of the child’s life but not the whole life. As soon as the parents realise it, half of the problems will go away.

Here are some things every parent should keep in mind to increase their child’s motivation level rather than the pressure level.

  • Know the child’s capability and stop the comparison – Your child is the best in a unique way which might differ from others. Knowing your child’s capability honestly will definitely be the first step towards a better lifestyle for you and your child.
  • Ensure that the child is eating a balanced diet – Make sure the child gets to eat healthy and always eats on time. Better food, better mind functioning.
  • Make sure the child gets enough sleep – Lack of sleep might lead to losing the information your child has grasped.
  • Do not keep them away from TV and other entertainment activities – All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Make them study but do not keep them away from a little entertainment. The mind gets blocked after some time and needs some kind of refreshment time to time.

Incase your child is not able to do well in the exam and they feel very upset about it, reassure them that there is always a second chance and passing an exam is only part of the story. It may be helpful to take some time to discuss any problems they had so they can avoid them next time.
