It includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Knowing words and what they mean<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recognizing sounds and letters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Expressing thoughts through speech<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Developing a love for stories<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These early skills help children walk into kindergarten feeling confident and excited to learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><a><\/a>Why Start Early?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a powerful fact:<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alabamapublichealth.gov\/newbornscreening\/assets\/early-literacy-matters.pdf\"><strong>80%<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>of a child\u2019s brain development happens in the first three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By age 2, a child\u2019s brain is already as active as an adult&#8217;s.<br>By age 3, it\u2019s twice as active!<br>This is a critical window for learning and the best time to build those early literacy skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a child isn\u2019t being spoken to, read to, or exposed to new words and ideas during this time, it becomes much harder for them to catch up later even in a great classroom environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s look at what the research tells us:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Vocabulary by age 3 can predict reading success by third grade.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reading aloud is the single most important activity for early literacy development.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Children whose parents (especially mothers) frequently talk to them as babies learn 300 more words by age 2 than those who aren\u2019t spoken to often.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>80% of brain development happens by age 3.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2><a><\/a>The Reality for Some Children<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, not all children have the same start in life.
