But children don&#8217;t always know what those feelings are, or how to talk about them. This is where we help as parents, educators, or caregivers. Supporting children to understand and express emotions is one of the most important life skills to provide them.<br>At The Manthan School, we help children grow not just in academics but also in emotional strength and confidence.<br>In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/developingchild.harvard.edu\/resources\/report\/building-core-capabilities-for-life\/\">studies<\/a> show that children who learn how to manage their emotions do better in school, have healthier relationships, and feel more confident overall.<br>Let\u2019s look at some simple ways to help young children name, understand, and express their big feelings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>1. Teach Emotion Words<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The first step is to teach children the names of feelings. Just like they learn colors or animals, they can also learn words like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Happy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Sad<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Angry<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Scared<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Excited<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Nervous<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Start by talking about emotions during everyday moments. Help Them Notice How Emotions Feel in the Body<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Feelings show up in our bodies, too. A child might say their tummy hurts before school because they\u2019re feeling nervous. Or they might clench their fists when they\u2019re angry.<br>You can help by saying things like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cIs your heart beating fast? Let All Emotions Be OK<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes adults say things like \u201cDon\u2019t cry,\u201d or \u201cCalm down.\u201d This might teach kids that certain emotions are bad.<br>Instead, tell children that it\u2019s normal to feel all kinds of emotions, whether happy, sad, angry, or scared. Praise Them for Expressing Feelings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When your child tells you how they feel, that\u2019s a big win! Let them know you\u2019re proud of them for using words instead of yelling or misbehaving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cThank you for telling me you were upset.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cI\u2019m glad you shared your feelings instead of scolding.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This shows your child that talking about feelings is the right thing to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>5. Teach the \u201cPause\u201d Trick<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes kids go from calm to angry very quickly.
