Is your child over two years old, and you're still wondering why they haven't said their first word yet? Hearing your child's first words is every parent's dream, so it's understandable to be concerned. But that's why we're here to help you figure things out.
Is your child unable to form words clearly?
After the age of two, most toddlers are expected to speak simple words and short sentences, but some of them are stuck in their babbling phase, which means they are not speaking effectively. Blabbing is a natural step towards speaking clearly; it allows toddlers to develop their vocal skills.
However, by the time they reach the age of two, he or she should be able to accompany the blabbing with coherent words. Although there may be a variety of reasons for their silence, one possibility is that they are naturally late speakers.
Is your child unable to express themselves?
If your child makes a lot of noise or yells but is unable to articulate clear words or speak, this may indicate a communication barrier. And the inability to express themselves might be frustrating for them.
Screaming can also be a method for children to gain attention. If toddlers realise that shouting produces a response from parents or carers, they may repeat the behaviour to ensure they are heard.
What causes the inability to speak words?
Lack of muscle coordination: Speaking required small, precise motions of the lips, tongue, and jaw. Some toddlers are still acquiring these skills or lack perfect coordination in their muscles.
Learning sounds: For young children, certain sounds like "r", "l", or "th" are more difficult. Mispronunciation is very commonly found in early years of speaking.
Limited Practice: If your child is not exposed to discussions, music, or storytelling, their speech clarity may develop more slowly.
Ear infections or hearing difficulties: If your child is unable to hear words properly, they will struggle to say them appropriately.
Signs Your Toddler Needs Speech Therapy
Sometimes all a child needs is a little nudge and some guidance to make their process of speaking clearly easier. If the signs given below sound like your child, speech therapy might be just what they need.
Limited Vocabulary: Around the age of two, toddlers normally begin to build a vocabulary of simple words.
Unclear speech: By the age of three or four, most children should be able to pronounce most sounds and words clearly enough for others to comprehend.
Trouble following commands: If you call their name or give them simple instructions, but they have trouble following it, it may be a sign that they are facing certain difficulties in language comprehension.
Avoids Social Interaction: Usually some toddlers like to play alone and enjoy their own company. But if you notice that they frequently avoid social interactions, it may be a sign that they feel they’re unable to express themselves.
Phonological Errors: If your child finds it hard to pronounce certain words, or constructing words correctly is a challenge for them, a speech therapist can give tailored guidance to improve their speech clarity and the ability to form words.
